As you would know a desert is a desert because of a few reasons but a big one is because of the lack of precipitation (Rainfall). Therefore the land does not get what it needs and turns to a waste land.

Whereas a tropical rain forest has large amounts of precipitation each year allowing health growth of nature and wildlife.

If you can put it together, the rain can make a big difference if the area will be a desert wasteland or a thriving ecosystem.
