Reflex actions are instantaneous, which is beneficial because we don't have to think about it. This means we can protect delicate body tissues. If you were punched say, you will blink automatically, to protect your eye. If you touch a boiling kettle, you withdraw your hand quickly to prevent burning yourself. Evolutionarily, they have developed to play a vital role in our survival.

It takes the brain about half of a second to register a stimulus in the conscious mind and respond. When something unexpected, sudden, and dangerous occurs, you don't normally have half a second to respond. If, let's say, a poisonous snake lunges at you, you don't have half a second to jump out of the way. Reflexes are preprogrammed responses in the spinal cord to certain types of stimuli. This way, the brain doesn't have to make a decision in such a situation. The spinal cord causes a response automatically within about a tenth of a second, saving valuable time.
