A river by definition always has running water. In order for the water to run from point A (its source) to point B (its end) , point B needs to be lower than point A. Water cannot run uphill, so point B can never be higher than A. If both points would be at the exact same height the water could also not run and you would get a lake instead of a river. So that's why the source of a river is always at a higher point (a mountain or a plateau) than its end.
