The death penalty is the only just sentence for a person who has cruelly taken the life of another. If every citizen is informed of the penalty for murder, and then a man commits murder anyway, he condemns himself to death and removes himself from the community. The death penalty guarantees that a violent sociopath or psychopath will never harm any member of society again. The death penalty should be applied to pedophiles as well because they will never be cured and they do unspeakable harm to the most defenseless members of the community.
Alternatively, the death penalty probably shouldn't be spread world wide. It has been shown that the death penalty does not reduce the murder rate, not does the threat of death deter individuals from engaging in criminal behavior. In fact, in some cases it has been shown to increase the crime rate in areas where it is practiced. It is often applied in a discriminatory matter, and raises major civil rights issues in the US, where racism is relatively tame compared to some areas of the world. Also, it is totally final. In many cases, later evidence has surfaced to prove that a person convicted of a crime was actually innocent years after the fact. In the case where that person is jailed, they can be released. But in a death penalty case, society has killed an innocent person. In addition to the guilty of those involved, this undermines the legitimacy of the government. Further, the death penalty is horribly expensive and costs governments millions of dollars that could be better spent protecting against crime.
The death penalty is the last truly brutal method of punishment, and there's a reason that countries with an interest in human rights are pushing to eliminate it.
In my opinion, I believe that the death sentence should be abolished only because the United States is putting many people in prison for murder, so what would they call having a person tied down on a chair and injecting that person with a fatal dose of drugs.
It is murder; therefore, how are they going to make others "stop killing" by killing more people? You can't fight fire with fire, why? because you cause a bigger fire.
People should have the chance to correct themselves for their sins, and if they repeat their sins, killing them will not solve the problem. If felons are kept in prison, they will truly learn a lesson in life and other people who are leaning towards the "murder life" will see what can happen and they won't want to spend their lives locked up.
Most felons hope to die, so they aren't taught a lesson, they are given a favor. Not that helping someone is bad, but if we keep the bad guy in prison, that bad guy will be proof of what a real felon will live like locked up. And any future felon watching will not want to be apart of that life.
