80,000 of Hirshima's population were killed by the A-bomb blast. Allied and Japanese military leaders agreed that a million or more soldiers and civilians would have died as a result of the invasion of Japan, which was due to start about a month after the bomb was dropped. Many Japanese Navy leaders were relieved that the bomb was dropped realizing full well how many lives it actually saved in the long run.
