Why should people be careful when putting snail with fish in their aquariums?

It's more about the health of the snails, not the fish. No snail is going to hurt a fish for instance. Like someone else mentioned, they will breed quickly and overtake your tank if you aren't careful. One type of snail that will not breed in freshwater is the Nerite snail and that's why it is so popular. It will lay eggs, which can be unsightly, but they will not hatch in freshwater. They need brackish water to hatch. The real thing to consider is having the correct food source for the snails. They will eat algae, but once they have done their job they will starve if you do not feed them. Algae wafers and certain vegetables are needed to keep them alive. I have found that their favorite is canned (no salt!!) french cut green beans. Has to be french cut though. Cucumbers are well received also. You will also need a calcium source or their shells will deteriorate. A cuttlebone will remedy this.
