Avoid salty food, as this will make you feel even thirstier. A lot of energy would be used up when on a long hike. Therefore, a semi-sweet snack bar (or a bag of mixed nuts, raisins, dried banana and other dried fruits) will top up the energy level along the way. Some hikers carry salt tablets, especially on a very hot day, to replace salt lost through excessive sweating, and will also carry plenty of water.
