It is a matter of respect to your fellow pupils and to the teacher. In life most of us do things as sort of a team and break the day up so that we do the same sort of activities together. Thus when we are working we concentrate on what we are doing and when we are eating we make this a more relaxed social type of activity. If you eat in class you are giving the signal to everyone that you do not care about what they are doing - that you do not respect their conventions.
Students should not eat in class. It's messy and most of them won't clean up after themselves. Plus, they're paying more attention to their food than they are to the lecture.

No middle school students need to learn how to talk and respond correctly to other students they know or may not know. How will they learn these life lessons if they are always seated by the same students?
