There aren't dress codes for lawyers. (In the UK anyway) lawyers could turn up to court in jeans and a t-shirt if they wanted, but will not give a good impression to the judge/jury deciding the case, so its in their best interests to dress smartly. If you are referring to barristers and judges (which aren't lawyers) then the wig and gown wearing is simply a matter of tradition, which most of them enjoy taking part in.
