There's no reason you "should" get your cartilage pierced. It's obviously not generally necessary or even desirable, medically speaking.
It's not especially dangerous, provided that the person doing it observes some minimum standards of hygiene, but that just means you can do it without worrying too much about an adverse impact on your health, not that you should do it.
If we're talking ears, the only reason is that the piercing is less likely to be accidentally torn out if your earlobes are fragile or exceptionally thin.
