A Pokemon event is where you can obtain special items like the azure flute(which you can use to summon arceus) and Pokemon like shaymin and darkrai. I never participated in one but i usually find advertisements on toys r us catalogs saying they offer rare Pokemon.

Don't bring any powerful Pokemon unless you are used to manipulating the ball. It just takes practice. Start out with a Rental Pass and experiment with where the ball drops and eventually You'll get it.
