I assume you are referring to Oscar Romero of El Salvador. In 1997, a cause for beatification and canonization into sainthood was opened for Romero, and Pope John Paul II bestowed upon him the title of Servant of God. The canonization process continues. He has passed the first stage towards canonization. In the next stage, after more investigations, he will receive the title of Venerable Oscar Romero. The entire process of canonization can sometimes take years or even centuries. This is especially true when the candidate for sainthood is controversial as is Oscar Romero.
