If it is a Ford, it could be the ignition module. If it is a VW, it could be a sort of reverse vapor lock -- VW has on some models a canister on the fuel line to help stop this. The fuel line runs too close to the exhaust, heats up, and prevaporizes the fuel.

From your description I would say you could rule out the battery but not the alternator (the part that charges the battery) but it's most likely the starter
