Saplings cannot always grow around the adult tree becuase:

1. The adult tree is taking all the water and nutrience from the ground

2. adult tress often block out the sun for the growing tree.

These stop the sapling getting what in needs in order to grow and more often than not the adult tree will win in the batte for food.
