I believe all Four gospels- Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John record the Christmas or more properly nativity story, but The second chapter of St. Luke is the usual one recited at Masses, etc. John is the ( last Gospel) this does not have any morbid angles akin to Last rites, but Chronologically he occurs last. As John is sometimes called the Apostle of Love, his message rings heartily in the Christmas season. At one time - this is no longer in practice, excerpts from the Gospel of John were recited towards the end of the Catholic Mass, regardless of the posted Scriptural readings- most of us are familiar with sort of wooden banner boards with Bible passages marked in code like John 3:l6 etc for use by worshipers and choir- as often hymn numbers were included. The obligatory recitation of portions of John's Gospel is not longer part of the Catholic Mass, one of the reforms of Vatican II.

The word “Christmas” comes from the “Christ mass” or “Mass of Christ”. The “mas” part of “Christmas” is the same as the word Catholics still use for a church service - a mass. It comes from the time when every saint had their own saint's day on which a mass or communion service was said in their memory.
