Television dishes do not have to be exactly circular in their perimeter, but circular is optimal, as it minimizes the amount of material needed for collection and focusing of the microwaves from the satellites. Some are oval. Theoretically they could be almost any shape, such as hexagonal, or the like, but what surface that does exist must have a parabolic cross section in order to focus essentially parallel microwaves to a point where the actual antenna is located some distance in front of the dish.
