This substance is actually a specialised form of the mother's droppings which, having passed through her digestive system, give the joey the enzymes it needs to be able to start digesting the tough gum leaves, making an easier transition for the baby koala to start eating eucalyptus leaves.
Eucalyptus leaves are tough, toxic and low in nutrition, but the koala's digestive system is capable of removing the toxins, filtering them out by the liver. The caecum completes the process by changing the eucalyptus leaves into digestible nutrients. Without the transitional stage of feeding on pap, the joey cannot develop its digestive system properly.

During birth, fluid comes out of the female's cloaca first, then the baby koala. It is born without hair. The still developing koala must make a journey to it's mother's pouch after it's born. To do so, it has strong arms that grasp it's mother's fur as it makes it's way to the safety of her pouch. The baby koala is called a Joey. The Joey then attaches its mouth to its mother's breast and feeds from her. The baby remains in the pouch for about 5 months. The pouch is important in keeping the baby koala safe. The environment in the pouch is kept constant, no matter what the environment is like outside the pouch. After the 5 months in the pouch, the koala will get out of the pouch and explore. It only goes back into the pouch if it feels unsafe or for sleeping. When the koala reaches 8 months old, it no longer goes into the pouch. When the koala reaches one year in age, the mother help the young get accustomed to eating leaves. The digested gum leaves come out of the cloaca of the mother and the young koala eats that. This digested food contains bacteria that will help the young koala in its development.
