Dirty contacts (if fitted) on the hatchback door. A broken door switch or broken door switch wire.
To the right of the headlight switch is a gauge light dimmer wheel , if that has been rotated all the way up , your courtesy lights will stay on with the doors closed. According to my 2004 Jetta owner's manual, that's the fuel filler cap indicator: " A warning light in the instrument cluster will come on if the fuel filler cap is not properly closed. If the warning light comes on, you should turn off the engine and close the fuel filler cap properly. Once the cap is properly closed all the way, the warning light will go out when the ignition is turned on again and the check cycle is complete. The completion of the check cycle depends on how you drive. If the awarning light has been on for at least 5 minutes, it will go out only when the ignition is turned off and on again."
Does the symbol of the car appear to have its boot open? If so, it means your boot or hatch isn't closed properly. Close it properly and the light should go out.
It stays on
If your courtesy lights are staying on with the doors closed and there is no door ajar warning light , check on your dash to the right of your headlight switch. There is a dimmer wheel switch for your guage lighting , if it has been rotated all the way up that turns on your courtesy lights when the doors are closed
Check your fusebox. The cover should have the list and functions of the different fuses. If not,try and remove the offending bulb in the warning light

Either the light switch is set to have the interior lights on or one of your doors is not closing properly (or at least the sensor thinks it isn't closed).
Does it stay on forever? Or does it eventually go out? FriPilot
