A rain gauge can be made of many things, but copper has some advantages. Copper fabricates easily and is inexpensive, along with being very resistant to corrosion. Copper is also poisonous to molds and slimy things that might want to grow on it.
It is made up of the, funnel, measuring cylinder, beaker and a copper cylinder.
A rain gauge is typically made out of plastic or glass. The container is usually cylindrical in shape and has measurement markings on the side to indicate the amount of rainfall. It also has a narrow opening at the top to collect the rainwater.
The standard rain gauge is 8 inches in diameter and 24 inches tall. The outer container is called the overflow can, and inside there is a brass or clear plastic measuring tube 2-1/2 inches in diameter and 20 inches deep. On top is a copper or white plastic funnel 8 inches in diameter.
A funnel closed at the bottom. made of glass or some transparent plastic. the spout part is long and graduated in inches.

The first standard rain gauge was called the Cheugugi and was created in 1440 in Korea. The first tipping bucket rain gauge was created in 1662 by Christopher Wren.

A rain gauge used to have inch as its measuring unit when it was made into use. Nowadays the unit has become millimeter & cintimeter.
a rain gauge works by first making sure it rained, and seeing how many inches the rain filled up the rain gauge.
Yes, a rain gauge measures the amount of rain to fall above the gauge.
Rain gauge measure quantity of rain in average height of rainfall per unit area. Basically, any container with the same area from the top to bottom would do. Rain gauge can simply be made by putting any cylinder in the open and measure the height of water collected after rain. Some advance rain gauge would have a wider mouth for rain collection and the level would be made in ratio and transform the reading to mm of rain fall over the collector. Advantage of having larger collector is the more accuracy.
