As you may know from your Middle/High School science classes, Earth revolves around the sun on it's axis of about 24 degrees. Because of this rotation, we have what are called Solstices and Equinoxes, a solstice being when the sun is the furthest northern or southern point twice a year, and an equinox being when night and day are the exact same length. The reason we have seasons is based on the fact that because of Earth's axis, at any given point during the year, the Northern hemisphere (half) of the Earth may be closer to the sun than the Southern Hemisphere, and vice-versa. Because the closer hemisphere is receiving more direct sunlight, they go through a period we refer to as 'Summer'. The further hemisphere, which is receiving more indirect sunlight, goes through a period we call 'Winter'

Hope this helps!
