The pyramids of Giza were built by three, fourth dynasty kings of Egypt to serve as burial chambers. The pyramids also served another purpose, it was believed that the point on the pyramid allowed the spirit to be directed towards the Gods (where it could be judged) and the small passages which can be found inside the pyramid are possible shafts where the Ba (spirit) could leave the dead to go to the afterlife.

The pyramids at Giza however were no knew idea, the Pharaoh, Sneferu (3rd Dynasty) had built the 'step pyramid' at Saqqara, for a similar purpose.
