Second Life is not for teens. You must be 18+ to play Second Life. However, if you are between the ages of 13-17, you can play Teen Second Life (teen.secondlife.com). Teen SL is a completely separate world from regular SL. It operates on the same platform, but you cannot access the regular SL world from Teen SL.
The reason you need to be at least 13 to play Teen SL (other than being a "teen") is because the virtual world is not suitable for younger children. The activities in-world are partially uncontrolled and hence, lots of things can happen that aren't appropriate under 13.
