The lightning comes before the thunder for two reasons:-
# The sound actually does come after the light, it is a secondary effect. The light is caused by the air heating up as a result of the electrical discharge. This heating causes the air to glow (the light bit) then to expand and after the discharge is finished to collapse again and the pressure wave of this happening causes the thunder (the sound bit). # The second reason is that light travels much much faster than sound so that from a distance you will see the lightning then a few seconds (the longer the time delay, the further away you are) later you hear the thunder.
