Why tin symbol is Sn not SN?

SN would be a compound containing sulphur and nitrogen- tins symbol is most probably from latin like that of lead (Pb) which comes from Plumbum.

All elements with two letters in their name, have the first letter as a capital and the second in lower case, so they can be easily recognised as elements and not compounds for example.
