The short answer is because they are required to, the longer answer is that Confession is a sacrament set up by God so that our post-Baptismal sin can be forgiven. Everyone, saving Our Blessed Lord, and His Mother, is a sinner before God. We cannot draw breath and not sin, even in the "perfect" who still commit inadvertent venial sin. We must receive Holy Communion as Our Blessed Lord told us point blank in the Gospel, that unless we receive Him in Holy Communion, there is no life in us. We may not receive Holy Communion in a state of sin, so God has provided the sacrament of reconciliation to us so that we may be worthy to receive Him in Holy Communion. Every Catholic should attend confession regularly, at least bi-weekly or monthly if you are receiving Holy Communion regularly, and once a year during Lent and Easter is absolutely required by the Church as the bare minimum to be a Catholic. To receive Holy Communion in a state of sin is perilous in the extreme as St. Paul points out, and incurs the additional sin of sacrilege.

Why do Catholics confess their sins to a priest?

Catholics confess their sins to a priest because they believe it is a way to seek forgiveness from God and receive spiritual guidance and support. The priest acts as a mediator between the individual and God, offering absolution and helping the person to make amends for their sins. This practice is rooted in the belief that the priest has been given the authority to forgive sins by Jesus Christ.

Why do Catholics confess to a a priest when the Bible says only God can forgive you?

The reason Catholics confess to a priest is because they claim that the priest is simply relaying what you said to God. But, even this statement is contradicting the Bible. 1 Timothy 2:5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; There is only one "middle-man" between you and God, and that is the man Christ Jesus. So unless we put Catholicism in authority over what the Bible actually says, the Catholics are 100% wrong in the case of confessing their sins to a priest.

Why do Catholics go to confession and what is the significance of this sacrament in their faith?

Catholics go to confession to confess their sins to a priest and receive absolution, or forgiveness, from God. This sacrament is significant in their faith because it allows them to reconcile with God, receive spiritual healing, and strengthen their relationship with Him. Confession also helps Catholics reflect on their actions, seek guidance for improvement, and experience the grace of God's mercy.
