Two phase and three phase electrical circuit have more energy in them, in a given time (cycle) that single phase. I believe two phase had twice the energy as a single phase circuit, and 3 phase has 3 time the energy.

You can get the same energy (H.P., work) done with a single phase circuit (motor), but you'd need to draw more current (twice the current compared to a 2 phase circuit.) If you examin a motor that can be wired either 110, or 220 VAC, you'll note that the current for the 110 VAC is twice the current for the 220 VAC wiring.

Two and 3 phase circuits allow motors or other high power industrial devices to pack more horsepower into the device, without drawing excessive amount of current. Larger current would demand larger wiring, breakers, etc. driving up costs.

Answer

For a given load, a three-phase supply requires around 75% of the volume of copper compared to a single phase supply and, therefore, is more economical. Also, three-phase motors are more compact, and are self-starting. Two-phase supplies are archaic and unlikely to be seen these days.

Why would three phase be used instead of single phase?

Three phase electricity is used instead of single phase for industrial situations. Industries use three phase electricity instead of single phase to operate electric motors driving heavy machinery. Three phase electrical motors produce more power from the same amount of electricity and maintain steadier speed. Small portable motors such as drills and mixers use single phase. Motors used around the house are single phase. Motors used to run large industrial machines use three phase.

How do you use a one phase motor in place of a three phase motor?

To use a single/one phase motor instead of a three phase motor is possible if you have a three phase power supply as you will only need to tap one of the three phases together with neutral and an earthwire, however to use a three phase motor instead of a single phase will require the provision of three phase power supply.

Can you use two single phase surge protectors instead of one three phase surge protector?

Each line would need a surge protector so you would need 3 single-phase surge protectors.

How do you connected 3 phase motor to single phase power?

Use VFD to make 3 phase from single phase source.

What is a rotary phase converter commonly used for?

A rotary phase converter is commonly used to convert a single phase electrical power source to three phases. This allows you to use three phases instead of one.

Do televisions use single-phase or 3-phase power?

Answer 1: TV's use single-phase power. Answer 2: TV's use single phase power of 220 or 110 volts ac power depending on what part of the world you live in.

Can you use this switch for three phase incoming and single phase outgoing?

No A intermediate switch can not be used to change three phase to single phase.

How do you converter single phase to three phase?

you can use a rotophase

How can you use a 3 phase capacitor as a single phase capacitor?

Just use any two of the three terminals that are available, this will give you a single phase capacitor.

What is the standard voltage used in homes and businesses in New York City?

Standard household and business power in the entire US is 120V single phase and 240V double phase. Light industry will likely use 208V three phase, 240V three phase, 400V three phase, 415V three phase, or 480V three phase. Heavy industry and subway systems use higher AC voltages and sometimes DC.

Why you use only single phase induction motor not other?

You would use a single-phase induction motor if the available electric power supply is a single-phase one. That applies to the average house or small business.

What will happen if you use phase to phase voltage for a single phase device?

Phase to phase, two wire is classed as single phase. If the voltage from the phase to phase match the device's operating voltage, then connecting the device will allow it to operate.
