It may need a fluid and filter change. The fluid will thicken with cold and the passages in the valve body may be partially clogged or the filter may be dirty.
Your trans fluid could be low or your trans is on it's way out the door.Some cars,reverse is the first to go.Good luck.If the fluid is not low,drop the pan replace the filter and put a trans additive in when you fill it up after the trans service.The best additive is called trans-x.
no it wont work ur 1996 thunderbird has a 4r70w aode trans which is an electronic trans, the 85 crown vic aod trans is not electronic it will probably bolt up... but not much else

The first check would be the fuse for the dash lights. If the dash lights are out too then it is likely to be the fuse.
researched it you have a sticking governor in the tranny tailshaft you can polish and reinstall or replace it ammco can do it for about 90.00 dollars on labor
make sure that trans is in N if that dont work turn car off then shift to 2wd or 4wd
you need a new trans
