It is possible for tsunamis to be detected in deep sea, however it is not to the same extent that they are seen on land. Most people have the misconception that tsunamis are like the tidal waves we see in destructive movies that are 100 stories high and plow over major ships.

When a tsunami is formed from an earthquake, it is no more than a displacement of water after energy is released from the earthquake. While at sea, this displacement may only feel like a small wave rising and falling a few inches. However, when all this displaced water reaches land, it rushes inland causing all the destruction that we have become familiar with.

To better demonstrate this, imagine sitting in a pool and moving your hand quickly underneath the surface, pushing the water with your palm. On the surface you'd notice a slight raise in the water, however once it reached the end of the pool, it'd come crashing into the side.
