Alcatraz closed down due to Prisoners escaping the grounds.
2.
The expenses of this prison were extremely high. It was also believe it was cruel to the prisoners because they can hear everything happend in San
Francisco. And as you should know, they would hear partying, firworks, buses, cars, people, boats, and they have to sit in a cell and listen. I don't believe that is why because only the most notorious criminals were there and they should have to listen, but thats one of the reasons. As I said before expenses were very high for the food, water, medicine, etc. to be brought to the island. It is not because someone escaped. That is just a rumor. It is close to San Francisco, but only during day you could probably escape (when the place is under full sercurity). If you escape at night, you'll have to swim and you'll drown in the deep waters with the current, waves, and rip tides. The government never actually povided us with the information on exactly why it closed. These are the top reason most people believe because these are the most believeable. There is one more which I think is fake. They say it began to get haunted. Which makes no sense because there are no records of anybody actually dying there. So I hope I helped answer your question.
March 31, 1963. Compared to Atlanta Federal Pen. where every prisoner cost an average $3 to taxpayers, every Alcatraz prisoner was costing taxpayers nearly $300. In addition, the prison was becoming to expensive to operate. The salt water was also taking a toll on several of the structures on the island. Before the penitentiary closed, it was estimated that over $5,000,000 would be needed to repair the facilities.
It was closed due to Frank Morris and John and Clarence Anglin escaping.
It was too expensive to run compared to other prisons.
The ocean it was surounded by was making the structure weak and unsafe to the prisoners.
