Frictional force.
There are five main reasons why having overwhelming force may fail to achieve victory:1) Strategy: If the leader of the numerically weaker force is able to effectively plan the battle, he may be able to force his enemy's hand. It may be something as simple as attacking with the sun behind you so that the larger force cannot bear to look you in the face or incredibly complex. Often when a battle is won against overwhelming odds, it is because of the general in charge. As Sun Tzu says in the Art of War: "If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle." Strategy is paramount.2) Chokepoint: If the geography prevents the larger force from swarming or overwhelming the smaller force, the smaller force's position can hold back a much larger force. The Battles of Thermopylae and Myeongnyang are perfect examples of this. In the former, 7,000 Greeks (300 Spartans and numerous others) held off a Persian force of over 100,000 in the thin strip of land known as the Thermopylae. In the latter, 12 Korean ships held back the Japanese Navy of 330 ships in the tidal Myeongnyang Strait. In both cases, the inability to flank the smaller force allowed the smaller force to use the position very effectively.3) Types of Troops: In some cases, the smaller force is simply made of a superior type of soldier or a more appropriate form of soldier to hold back the adversary. The Mongols often overran adversaries with far larger armies, but nowhere near the mobility or skill of Mongol light cavalry. A phalanx can stop entire hordes of horsemen, if they hold their position well.4) Climatic Issues: If the environment makes it impossible to sustain the large force, nature can do the job enemy soldiers are less able to do. The Russian Winter and Vietnamese Jungle are two environments known to be taxing on invaders, causing retreat even with superior forces.5) Guerrilla Tactics: If the smaller force uses tactics that prevent direct engagement, the smaller force can pick off members of the larger force with the guerrilla tactics.
