The colonies were providing raw materials and numerous finished goods. Britain needed the lumber, tobacco and other natural resources that were not available on the small islands of Great Britain. They also served as a tax base to help support the other wars Britain was fighting.

Not all colonies were for it. If the colonies were divided in two, the war would be lost. Also British was the superpower of that time. They were in debt from the French-Indian war and needed money to pay that back. Colonists would be taxed under British, or self rule. Also, Britain was the main trading partner of the states, especially the north which relied heavily on trade. During, and after the war a sour relationship with Britain could mean economic suffrage. Most manufactured goods were from Britain as well. Also Britain had the best navy of the time, and almost all of the colonies had a huge shoreline.
