Camelot was important in medieval literature, though it might never have existed in reality. The earliest mention of Camelot we have is in "Lancelot, the Knight of the Cart," a poem by Chrétien de Troyes in 1170. At that time, the Arthurian legends were gaining in importance rapidly, and the Chrétien de Troyes, an author known for inventing good stories, might simply have made the place up. It is possible he based the name on Camulodunum, which had once been the capital of Britain, and is now called Colchester. There are other views on the subject, but none that is considered really convincing. One way or the other, it became the most important castle and court in Arthur's kingdom in many of the stories about him.
