Christopher Columbus was not just curious and noble in motive. He wanted to find a short way to get to the Indies by ship. Since he was a Christian, he wanted to tell the story of Christ to people he met and covert them to Christianity. This is when he wanted to gain POWER. Also Columbus tried for eight (8) years to get King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella to give him ships and money. He demanded to be made a knight, admiral of the sea, be viceroy and governor general of all lands he would discover. He also wanted one-tenth of everything he found of value in the new lands. Christopher Columbus continued to emphasize about his religious feelings and his desire to transform the natives to Christianity and his reverence to the Bible. Yes, it was true that he was concerned about God, but there was something even bigger to him. He was even more concerned about GOLD. Columbus wanted gold more than anything else. In the first two (2) weeks of journal entries, there is one word which is repeated at least seventy-five (75) times: GOLD. This proves that another of Columbus's reason for making his voyage to the 'New World', apart from POWER is WEALTH. In his quest for gold, Columbus saw that the Indians had little gold, and was confident that there were huge amounts of it. He sent out orders to the natives to find a certain amount of gold in a certain amount of time. As a result, if they did not meet their quota, their arms were to be hacked off. The others had to learn from this and deliver the gold. Unfortunately, Columbus could not obtain enough gold to impress the king and queen and his Spanish financiers, and decided to send back to Spain another kind of loot: SLAVES. Christopher Columbus wanted Gold, Wealth and Power! Love Always ~*Mimi*~
