Because the only means of transporting that many men from Britain to France had to be by boat. (Landing Craft) The raid on Dieppe in 1942 had shown the Allies incapable of taking a French port intact from the Germans. Therefore the alternative was to land on 5 beaches between the mouth of the Seine & the Cotentin peninsula.
They landed near to St Mere Eglise inland from Utah beach.
