Emperor Qin believed in an afterlife and therefore was logically quite invested in the eventual situation of his spirit. He also decided to pursue a longer material life by consuming copious amounts of minerals, including Mercury. This had rather the opposite effect. The combination of dying from mercury poisoning and his ever -deteriorating, unstable mentality made him quite desperate for any opportunity of a rewarding afterlife.
