Eros was the god of physical love and beauty, lust and sex; he was sometimes associated with fertility as well, given the nature of his main roles. It is from his name we get the word 'erotic' and other similar words. He is usually associated with the similar Roman god Cupid (who like all Roman gods is much "cleaner" than the Greek version) and fulfilled the same tasks of making people fall in love, or at least want each other.

Without Eros (Eros the primal god, not Eros the son of Aphrodite) no new generations are born, no procreation at all.
