Golda meir was Prime Minister of Israel between 1969 - 74. She was Israel's fourth PM and the only female Israeli Premier to date. Born in 1898, she began life as a teacher before becoming a 'kibbutznik' and then entering politics in 1946, soon after the end of WW2. A signatory of Israel's Declaration of Independence from British-ruled Palestine, she became Foreign Minister in 1956 under the leadership of David Ben Gurion and at the time the Suez Crisis broke out. Elected as Labour PM in March 1969, she was Premier during the Munich Olympics massacre and also during the Yom Kippur War of October 1973, during which she decided against launching a pre-emptive strike against Syrian forces massing on The Golan Heights for fear of alienating potential US support if Israel were seen to be the aggressor. The conflict was one of the most serious incidents of the Cold War and nearly led to direct Superpower confrontation, which could have resulted in global nuclear war. Following the crisis, her governing Labour Party was subject to internal disputes and in-fighting which resulted in her resignation in April 1974. She died in 1978 at the age of 80.
