Actually it was Henry VIII who was called Defender of the Faith because he wrote a treatise denouncing the reformist ideals of Martin Luther (who was condemned as a heretic), and the Pope therefore gave him the title "Defender of the Faith". Ironically, Henry broke away from the Church of Rome in later years. And, yes, he probably was a bit smelly in those days!
