No single reason, but one of the biggest was that the Germans weren't prepared to advance through a Russian winter. Everyone will fight intensely to defend their homes, and the Russians fought bitterly against the German invaders.

The Germans had expected to be able to defeat the Russians while the weather was still good. But the stiff defense during the summer and fall seasons left the German invaders still before the gates of Stalingrad and well outside of Moscow at the beginning of the severe Russian winter.
