JK Rowling's actual full name was Joanne Rowling. However, editors of Rowling's first book, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, thought that many readers wouldn't be interested in a book written by a female author, so they told Rowling to change her name so that there were first and middle name initials followed by the last name, so that readers wouldn't know that Rowling is female. Since Rowling didn't have a middle name, she chose Kathleen as her middle name, after her paternal grandmother. Her new full name became Joanne Kathleen Rowling and was shortened to J.K. Rowling (so that readers wouldn't know she was female).
