Jack the Ripper was a man who believed god wanted him to kill all prostitutes. People believe he killed between 5 and 11 prostitutes in his time. Jack the Ripper became famous because he was not caught while he was alive and he managed to kill so many. He is also well known for his gruesome ways of killing these women. He usually cut them up, often attempted to cut their heads off, sent their body parts to the police, and even ate some of their body parts.

It would be very difficult to prove that JTR was motivated by God or anything else. This would take at least identifying the man to find out why he did what he did. There is no indication from the bodies or crime scenes that these were religiously motivated murders.

All killers, especially serial killers, need to be studied. For the people that understand the 'language' killers sometimes speak loudly by the victim's bodies, and the crime scenes they leave behind. Jack The Ripper was an extreme rarity for his time. He came long before the post-WWII, almost epidemic, rise in serial murder. Years and decades before DNA, hair and fiber analysis, profiling, and the computerized data that is available on a worldwide level at the touch of button, or in most cases, a keystroke.

Over one hundred years after the muders there most likely will be no justice for the unfortunate women that crossed paths with this brutal killer, no comfort for their families. But there can be an understanding of the killer himself. Insight into his twisted mind may help prevent other preditors of this kind.

To say that the crimes of Jack The Ripper somehow altered world history would be giving too much significance to his crimes. Although his misdeeds were of interest on an internation level, for most it was just morbid curiosity. The world wars altered history. Nuclear weapons altered history. The fall of communism and the fall of the Berlin Wall altered history.

As for Jack The Ripper, his crimes illuminated poverty and the need for advanced crime detection methods. In this capacity he was sucessful.

Serial murder is as old as the human race. But the killer known as Jack The Ripper was probably the first to have his crimes played out daily in the press. Not just the local London papers but on a global scale. He was big news everywhere. In 1888 it took about two weeks for London papers to reach America. But JTR's exploits as reported in newspapers kept people on the other side of 'the pond' waiting in anticipation. The fact that the Ripper was never caught or identified only added to the mystery and appeal, making him the most recognized serial killer in history.

Mainly due to the fact that the murders attributed to the Ripper were so viciosly violent; and also the fact that the person was never caught.
