Jamestown was located on the worse land in the area. The water was bad, mosquitos carried diseases, and they were in an empire of 15,000 Native Americans. The 106 men didn't plant crops but looked for gold. The tribes located in the area left them alone because they knew the water and the diseases would kill them. They were right. Within 6 months 34 men were alive.

How did native Americans interact with Jamestown settlers?

When the men landed to form the Jamestown colony they had problems with the native Americans in the area. They built a fort and within the first six months of the 107 who landed only 44 were still alive. This is due to a combination of disease and attacks by the local Native Americans. So, the interactions between the colonist and the Native Americans wasn't very good.

What did john smith do for people in the Jamestown colony?

During his 2 years in Jamestown he is responsible for the survival of the colony. As the colony's president from 1608-1609 he ruled fairly, but was firm. Regardless of rank everyone was expected to work for the common good. His bold leadership, military experience, and determination gave a measure of discipline to the dying dissolute colonists; his working with the Native Americans prevented starvation and his dispersal of the colony from unhealthy Jamestown lowered the Death Rate. In October of 1609 he was wounded by a gunpowder explosion and returned to England. After his return to England he promoted and wrote about the Americas and this contributed to people wanting to come to the America's.
