Japan won the war by it's naval battles. Contrary to what many historians write, the Russian Navy had NEW BATTLESHIPS at the Battle of Tsushima on 27 May 1905 (also called the Battle of the Japan Sea). Contrary to what many historians write, the Russian Navy fought well at Tsushima and hit what they aimed at; Togo's flagship, the Mikasa, received several main battery hits (12"). And again, contrary to what many historians have written, the Russian sailors were as brave and competent as many contemporary sailors of the time.

It would appear that "some" of those historians were attempting to undermine the Imperial Navy's victory at Tsushima by demeaning the Russian Navy during that war, with Tsushima in particular. They, being guided by the phrase, "the greater the foe, the greater the victory." When in fact the opposite is correct, when compared to the WWI sea battle of "Lost Opportunities" (Jutland), both the Germans and the British (the primary source of "those writers") RAN AWAY FROM EACH OTHER! There never was a decisive battleship fleet action in WWI. Whereas at Tsushima, the Russians had but two choices: Fight or Surrender (running away as the Germans and British did in WWI was not an option; as the slow moving Russians (8 knots) would've easily been over-taken). The courageous Russians charged! This was history's only decisive battleship charge; WWII would see smaller warships conducting such actions...but not a steel battleship fleet.

Russia could've won the war on land, as the Transiberian Railroad had just been completed, and Russia had un-limited manpower. Russia was just warming up! Japan was running out of military aged men, and MONEY! The war was near bankrupting Japan. But Russia had lost 2 of it's 3 battleship fleets, and it's remaining Black Sea Fleet mutineed (the battleship Potemkin affair) in 1905 after receiving news of the Tsushima fight.

The Russian battleship fleet at Tsushima had voyaged over 18,000 miles one way, the hulls were heavily fouled, thus reducing their speed to about 8 knots. They couldn't expend shells for training, as they were needed for battle. They couldn't re-supply, as Britain had a treaty with Japan, not allowing any porting for the Russian fleet...they had to "sneak" into hidden bays or re-supply at sea from German paid coalers. Consequently, the Russians were overworked, underfed, were inexperienced in gunnery (due to a lack of shells to practice with); and yet they fought like tigers and struck the Japanese flagship with main battery fire more than historians give them credit for

What nation lost the Russo-Japanese War?

Japan would've, had the war continued. Russia had just completed their Trans-Siberian railroad and were prepared to send mass reinforcements to the front; they were just warming up! It was at sea where Russia really suffered, losing 2 out 3 battleship fleets. Battleships cannot be replaced as easily as infantrymen can. But Japan was running low on able bodied men, and money. The war was bankrupting Japan...had it continued much longer. Thanks to Roosevelt's mediating of the war, Japan was considered the victor, Russia accepted defeat.

Was it necessary for the US to drop an atomic bomb on Japan?

It would have been possible for the US to defeat Japan without using atomic bombs, however, there was a strategic reason for using the bombs, which was that Russia had entered the war and was intent on occupying Japan in much the way that they took over eastern Europe, and note that there is still one Japanese island occupied by Russia to this day, in 2011. So the US, which even before WW II was entirely over was already making plans for the Cold War to come, needed to bring the war with Japan to a rapid conclusion, and they were able to do that by using atomic bombs.
