It could be that he is very unhappy about something, possibly family issues, and Christmas brings all of the unhappy issues to the 'surface', so to speak. I am speaking as an atheist. I think a lot of people are unhappy at Christmas because a big deal is made out of some supernatural fairly tales. So maybe getting depressed in a natural reaction to having to deal with all the fake-ness.
