I believe that they went for Passover and to pay taxes and be counted for the census which was required by law.
Luke 2:46 tells us that he was at the temple: "sitting in the midst of the teachers, both hearing them, and asking them questions" (ASV)
Jesus was 12 years old.
When Jesus was lost his parents found him in the temple; He said to them "Didn't you know that I would be in the house of my father?"

In Luke 2:41-50 is the story of Jesus at the age of twelve remaining in Jerusalem at the temple. Jesus was not disobedient to his parents. The story tells us that His parents thought Jesus to be in the company of others as they traveled back to Nazareth. At the evening's end, His parents could not find Him anywhere in the company of people they were traveling with, so they returned to Jerusalem to find Him, and they did indeed find Him in the temple. Jesus was not a disobedient Son.

When Jesus was twelve years old he accompanied His parents to Jerusalem to celebrate the Passover. When the celebration was over his parents left for home and assumed that Jesus was with others in the party. When it was discovered that Jesus was not among them they returned to Jerusalem to find Him. He was found in the Temple sitting among the teachers listening to them and asking them questions. When His parents asked why He had stayed behind He answered, "Did you not know that I must be about My Father's business"? This is found in Luke 2:41-50.
