There was a census (official counting of the population) in all the Roman provinces at the time around the birth of Jesus. Every man was required to travel to the province his parents were from, to be counted in the census. Joseph's family was from Bethlehem, so he had to take Mary there. When they arrived, there were so many people in the town because of the census, that no one had any room inside their home to take Joseph and Mary in. So they had to sleep in a stable, and when Mary gave birth, there was no real bed to lay the baby in, so they used what was available; a manger used for feeding animals. The story is also a way of showing that God humbled Himself to become a man, and met us on our level, He didn't come as a rich man on a throne, but as a baby from a poor family, to identify with people who are poor in this world.
