Kane Hodder was actually sent a copy of the script, but he ultimately lost the role to stuntman Ken Kirzinger, who had earlier ties to Friday the 13th from part 8: Jason Takes Manhattan as a cook in New York who Jason throws over a counter. Hodder was originally going to be cast, but Ronny Yu wanted a taller actor with a different walking style as well.

The director of Freddy Vs. Jason, Ronny Yu, wanted to cast a new actor for Jason who would be able to 'tower' over Freddy, and thus appear more menacing. Kane Hodder is 6 feet and 1.5 inches tall, whilst Ken Kirzinger is 6 feet and 5 inches tall. If Robert Englund is only 5 feet and 9 inches tall, then Kirzinger would be the best choice. Ironically also, Ken Kirzinger had played Jason briefly as a stuntman in Jason X, so he also knew some of the challenges involved. However, height was definitely the main reason.
