Simply - any medium is involved in witchcraft...and whether the medium believes it or not, they are communicating with demons...not the dead...Demons will always lie to a person and encourage the medium and the person consulting in the ways of Satan not the ways of God. That is why God forbade necromancy...the seeming "consultation of the dead" ---- I will not remove the previous answer. i add mine on. i would think that it was wrong for Saul to consult Samuel, because instead of being a theocratic leader, consulting the Lord in all things, he consulted the dead. This was not to be condoned. This lack of confidence in God was also seen in another part in the Book of Samuel, where Saul gave burnt offerings to inquire of the Lord. Saul has yet to be a god-fearing king. And it was said in Chapter 12, that it is GOOD if both the people and the king the Israelites have asked for is god-fearing. Otherwise, not stated, but can infer. From this, i conclude that Saul was acting against the Lord's will for him.
