Best Answer

It started with the Roman fort of Mamucium, which was established approximately 79AD on a small hill near the confluence of the rivers Medlock and Irwell. The textile manufacturing boom during the industrial revolution caused a huge boom in the growth of Manchester. It has the perfect climate for textiles and especially cotton. It is claimed by most historians to be the world's first industrialized city. The building of the Bridgewater Canal in 1761 built to transport coal triggered a huge factory building program which transformed Manchester into a major town. It was granted city status in 1853. In 1894 the Manchester Ship canal was built which linked it to the sea and created more growth.
