Why was Mother Teresa's first AIDS clinic important to mankind?

Mother Teresa and her Missionaries of Charity have opened AIDS hospices all over the world and were one of the first, if not THE first, group to provide shelter, love and care to those suffering from this dreaded disease that is still misunderstood in many areas of the world. She filled a niche that was badly needed. Many of those suffering from AIDS were shunned even by their own families and many medical facilities refused to deal with them. They were left alone to wander the streets and die there, alone and forgotten.
Mother Teresa's group was never formed to be a provider of medical services. There are many other missionary groups who do this, both Catholic and non-Catholic. It has always been her aim to provide care, shelter and love to those who are dying. Mother Teresa always felt that no one deserved to die abandoned and without a friend to comfort them and ease their final transition. While she knew she could offer no cure for AIDS or other terminal diseases she encountered she always did what could be done with the resources available to her.
